Our Curriculum

Keys Meadow Primary School is committed to providing a challenging, demanding, creative curriculum that responds to the whole child’s physical, social and emotional as well as intellectual needs.  
We believe that a strong school ethos (a nurturing climate for learning where excellence is expected from all), an insistent “can do” approach, a belief that ‘talent is grown, not born’, raising self-esteem and positive behaviour management are the keys to achievement.
 
 
 
 
 



Early Years

The Early Years follow the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage. Nursery and Reception offer a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment that encourages the children to explore, investigate and learn through first-hand authentic experiences and play. The curriculum starts from where the child is and provide a solid foundation for all future learning. The Early Years/Foundation Stage curriculum is continued at the start Key Stage 1 (Year 1) to ensure a smooth transition.
The programme for the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) follow the Early Learning Goals of the seven areas of learning:      
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Mathematics
  • Literacy
  • Understanding of the world
  • Expressive arts and design
Key Stage 1 and 2
In Key stages 1 and 2, we use the Essentials Curriculum to plan themes and topics from the ‘Power of Reading’ texts and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). These topics are used as ‘vehicles’ for teaching and learning the Primary National Curriculum 2014. They are often cross-curricular (include a range of subjects) but they can be subject specific. Our aim is to deliver an inspiring, creative, skill based, broad and balanced curriculum organised into long term plans using the Primary National Curriculum Objectives in Key Stages 1 and 2. These are translated into half termly, weekly and daily plans covering objectives, activities and outcomes. Half termly overviews can be seen in each class page on the website. They include information about our ‘curriculum drivers’ – these reflect our school values and the traits we want to see developing in our pupils. The core subjects taught are:

The foundation subjects are:

  • Religious Education (RE)
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
  • Art and Design  
  • A Modern Foreign Language (French) is taught from Year 3 onwards
 
Religious Education (RE) provides an opportunity to celebrate and foster awareness of differences within our school and community and the wider world. It is a subject that celebrates diversity, challenges stereotypes and develops a positive attitude towards other people, respecting their right to hold different beliefs from their own, and towards living in a society of many religions and beliefs. Religious Education is an open, exploratory subject which does not assume faith and belief. The children are taught about the world’s different religions through a thematic approach.
 
Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is a legal requirement providing learning about physical, moral and emotional development, the understanding of the importance of family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health. The SRE programme is included on the website by following the curriculum link.
 
 
‘Out of Doors’ learning figures highly in our priorities and includes any learning undertaken beyond the classroom – in other areas of the school, the school grounds, the neighbourhood and local area, at home, in London and further afield. The school annually undertakes really successful residential journeys.
 
Our own ‘I Can’ Programme is designed to help our children to live like champions and heroes, and to develop the essential characteristics of successful people.  

We seek to ensure that the curriculum on offer does not in any way discriminate against pupils on the grounds of ability, race, background, learning style or gender.

 

The School provides many opportunities to enrich and develop the curriculum and celebrate their achievements through intra-school activities including:
  • Performances, concerts and productions; School Choir and Orchestra
  • Exhibitions and displays
  • “High Flyer”  Assemblies
  • Hero Sweatshirts and Wristbands – ‘I Can’ Programme
  • Sports Days
  • Working with sports coaches, musicians (Wider Opportunities Programme), visual artists and writers in residence
  • Extended opportunities (eg canoeing, horse riding, archery, chef’s kitchen)

  • Global Partners
  • Junior Leadership Team
  • Competitions (Art, Writing)
  • Residential experiences
  • ‘Work experience’
​as well as inter-school activities including:
·        A range of sports teams (football, netball, rugby, athletics, swimming, ‘inclusive sports’)
·       The Enfield Dance Festival and Folk Dance Festival
·       Singing and Dance Days
·       Public Speaking and Debating
·       Chess tournament
