The Letters and Sounds programme is used to teach phonics and decoding. This supports the reading and writing curriculum in Early Years and Key Stage One.

Reading is taught with 'real books' which are graded to support the increasing levels of development. Whole class, group and individual activities are used to teach children to read.

The School has introduced the ‘Power of Reading’ project, an evidence-based programme from the Centre for Literacy in Education.

It is improving reading and writing through ‘in depth’ responses to whole texts. Literacy skills lessons focus on words and sentence level skills (vocabulary, handwriting, grammar, punctuation and spelling). Discrete Extended Writing lessons provide opportunities for children to write for sustained periods of time. Different writing forms are taught and practised through topic work.
